Hermès Béarn Soufflet — Gold Epsom Leather, Palladium-Plated H Clasp
Hermès Béarn Soufflet — Gold Epsom Leather, Palladium-Plated H Clasp

The Hermès Béarn wallet has been a house classic for decades. Its signature feature: a leather tab that slips into an palladium-plated metal “H” clasp, a simple detail that is enough to identify the brand without any visible logo.
This model is made from gold Epsom leather, the most sought-after combination of the Béarn. This finely and evenly grained calfskin retains its shape and resists scratching on a wallet, which is what matters. The gold, a warm caramel that has become an Hermès signature color, takes on an amber depth enhanced by the ecru saddle stitching.
The interior follows the model's classic configuration: bill compartment, zippered coin pocket, card slots and flat pockets. The signature Hermès Paris Made in France is stamped in the center.
The piece shows signs of use: the palladium-plated H is worn, the stitching has slight localized unraveling, and the leather has developed a supple patina.

A French geography
Hermès and the birth of the Béarn wallet
At Hermès, there is a discreet tradition: naming certain creations after French regions. The Béarn is a tribute to this southwestern territory nestled between the Pyrenees and Gascony, whose name the house chose for one of its most enduring leather goods creations.
Its design has never changed: a slim silhouette, numerous compartments for cards, coins, and banknotes, and above all, this leather tab that slips into an H-shaped clasp. The gesture is so simple that it seems obvious, and so distinctive that it is enough to identify the house without any logo appearing. This is precisely what Hermès seeks: recognition through form, never through display.
Over the decades, the model has been produced in several variations - Béarn Soufflet, Béarn Combiné, Béarn Compact, Béarn Mini - and in all the house's leathers, from Epsom calfskin to Mysore goatskin, box calfskin, and lizard. Older examples sometimes bear the name Cadenas, after the clasp inspired by that of the Kelly bag, before the Béarn name became definitive.
Today, the Hermès Béarn wallet is among the most sought-after small leather goods on the secondhand market. Accessible without being commonplace, it represents an entry point into the house's world for many and, for collectors, an object whose combinations of leather and color are methodically sought out.
Epsom salt
Racing leather, an upholstery color
Epsom calfskin takes its name from a town in southeast England famous for its racecourse - an intentional nod from a house born in the harness trade. Introduced into Hermès' collection in 2004, this embossed leather is distinguished by a fine, even, slightly glossy grain created through mechanical embossing. It has a dry feel and a rounded, firm hand.
This technical choice is far from insignificant in a wallet. Where supple leather would eventually deform under the pressure of cards, Epsom retains its shape and resists scratching: it is the leather of precision, allowing for crisp angles, perfectly finished edges and a silhouette that remains slim year after year. Only the grain gradually fades at points of friction, marking use without betraying it.
As for gold, it is undoubtedly the most fitting color in the Hermès palette. This warm caramel, a direct heir to natural saddlery leathers, possesses the rare quality of going with everything without ever appearing neutral. Paired with palladium-plated metal, which is cooler and more resistant to oxidation than gold, it creates a contrast of perfect sobriety, in which the leather's warmth responds to the clasp's silvery gray.
What remains essential is the saddle stitching, executed with two needles and waxed linen thread, whose crossed stitch never comes completely undone. This is why a twenty-year-old Hermès wallet can still be worn, and why slight unraveling is repaired rather than deemed beyond saving. At Ecoluxury, this is exactly what we look for in a pre-owned luxury leather piece: not a new object, but one made to last.
